Asin

Asin Thottumkal (born October 26, 1985[1]) is an Indian film actress from the state of Kerala. She is currently considered to be one of the most popular actresses in the South Indian film industry.

Making her acting debut in Sathyan Anthikkad's Narendra Makan Jayakanthan Vaka (2001), Asin had her first commercial success with Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi in 2003, and won a Filmfare Award for the Best Telugu Actress for the film.

After a number of films, she received her second South Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance in her second Tamil film, Ghajini (2005). She played the lead female roles in hits, Ghajini (2005) which is her biggest commercial success to date, and the action comedy Varalaru (2006). More recently, Asin made her début in Bollywood, with Ghajini, the remake of its Tamil namesake, subsequently winning the Filmfare Best Hindi Debut Award.

Career

Asin Thottumkal debuted in a supporting role in Sathyan Anthikkad's unsuccessful Malayalam film Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka in 2001, at the age of 15. After taking a year out to pursue her education, Asin returned with her breakthrough film as an actress, Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi opposite Ravi Teja, portraying a Tamil girl in her first Telugu language film, which subsequently fetched her the Telugu Filmfare Award for Best Actress. In the same year she won the Santosham Best Actress Award for her performance alongside Nagarjuna in her second Telugu film, Shivamani. Her following two Telugu films, Lakshmi Narasimha and Gharshana, both portrayed Asin as the love interest for police officers, giving her two more solid hit films, cementing her place as a leading actress in the Telugu film industry.

Asin's first Tamil language film was M. Kumaran son of Mahalakshmi, in which she co-starred with Jayam Ravi. Asin reprised her role from her film Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi for the remake, which saw her portraying a Malayali girl instead of the Tamil girl in the original. The movie subsequently went on to become one of the biggest hits in Tamil cinema during 2004, introducing Asin to Tamil film industry. After a brief return to Telugu films, to do Chakram, her first failure as a senior artiste, she appeared in Ullam Ketkumae. The film, initially launched in 2002, was originally meant to be the launch for Asin as a lead actress, along with then-debutants Arya and Pooja Umashankar. The college love story, directed by Jeeva, was long-delayed but eventually became a successful venture at the box-office, creating wider opportunities for her and the rest of the lead cast.

Breakthrough, 2005 - 2007

After the release of Ullam Ketkumae, Asin became publicized as a leading heroine after signing films with the four leading actors of the Tamil industry: Surya, Vikram, Vijay and Ajith in Ghajini, Majaa, Sivakasi and Varalaru respectively. The venture which provided the breakthrough for Asin to become the leading South Indian actress was her Tamil film, Ghajini. The film, co-starring Surya and Nayantara and directed by A. R. Murugadoss, helped Asin secure the Tamil Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Her role, that of a vivacious young model called Kalpana who dies, became a trendsetter and was parodied in several other films after the release of Ghajini praised her portrayal as "magical" and that "Kalpana was the lovable chatterbox, sheer ability in the romantic interludes, the poignant and heartfelt scenes when she rescues minor girls from villains and her gory end are touching". The reviewer further went on to mention that "The chemistry between the lead pair in the first half is a delight", a view that became common among film producers who attempted to put their pair opposite each other for the films, Sillunu Oru Kaadhal and Vaaranam Aayiram, both of which started without Asin. The following Diwali in 2005, Asin had two big releases in Sivakasi and Majaa. Despite the latter becoming an average grosser, the former also went on to be a successful venture at the box office, despite Asin's poorly etched out role,

The following year, Asin opted for a less hectic schedule, becoming more choosy with her roles, rejecting several opportunities in the process. Her long-delayed venture, Varalaru opposite Ajith Kumar, became the biggest blockbuster of 2006 in Tamil cinema, after releasing for Diwali 2006. The film's hero-centric plot retreated Asin to the sidelines, but her role was well acclaimed by critics. Asin kept intact with her popularity in Telugu films by appearing in Pawan Kalyan's Annavaram, another successful venture in which she had a poorly-etched out role.In January 2007, Asin appeared opposite Ajith Kumar and Vijay in two different films, Aalwar and Pokkiri, with the latter becoming a super success, whilst Aalwar became a failure. The two projects which released on the same day, had been billed up as rival films due to the rivalry of the lead actors in the films. Whilst Asin's role in Aalwar was criticized, her performance in Pokkiri was lauded by critics. Her final project of the year was opposite in Hari's Vel, which had a Diwali 2007 release, subsequently becoming her third successful film which released during the Diwali season in three years. The film saw Asin and Surya put apart their creative differences and appear alongside each other after Ghajini. Asin, who portrayed a TV anchor, was appreciated for her role in the film.

Asin's New Film News

Asin to learn martial arts for new film

Asin goes Nepalese
The smash hit film Ghajini, which was originally made in Tamil and then in Hindi, is all set to be remade in Nepalese.

Geetha Arts, the same production house that produced the Hindi version, will be remaking the film in Nepalese under the title Gajendra.

Noted Napalese film maker Narayan Puri will don the director’s cloak for this venture. It may be noted that Puri has several Nepalese films to his credit including the latest Alpabiram, which is based on an army man and a Maoist.

Though the star cast not yet been finalized, Puri revealed that Asin, who played the role Kalpana in both the Tamil as well as the Hindi version, will play the role in Gajendra too.

Asin to learn martial arts for new film

Asin who is busy in bollywood is back in Kerala, her home state, and will soon be shooting for Bharath Bala’s multi-lingual The 19th Steps to be shot here later this year.

She has already started preparations and will be back in Kerala later this month to learn the tricky steps of Kalarippayattu, state’s traditional martial art that is considered a male bastion. Kamal Haasan is playing an important role in the film, which also has popular Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano.

“The film is being produced by Walt Disney and a good portion will be shot in Kerala,” the Kochi girl told reporters. "This is going to be made in Tamil, Japanese and English and shooting will start in the second half of this year. For this I need to learn martial arts because the storyline demands it.”

Kamal Haasan plays the role of an Indian martial arts guru.

Asin to do ad film with Dhoni

Kochi girl Asin Thottunkal, the new queen of Bollywood thanks to Aamir-starer Ghajini, is consistently giving nightmares for the other celebrity belles of Mumbai as she conquers one field after the other. She has been there in the ad world even years ago, but her victory march has taken to newer fields in that area now. She is in the real big league now, and her old friends in Kochi are wondering how their unimpressive childhood “gal” could do all this. Soon she will be seen with the icon of Indian cricket, Mahender Singh Dhoni. She has signed a big endorsement deal for a retail chain through which she will be seen opposite Dhoni. Her friends say that she might have taken that contract for Ghajini in the best of times that astrology refers to, for she is on the top of the world after that film. Her ad shoot contracts are multiplying each passing week, and she is now the face of seven major products in India. Her girl-next-door image, matched with a beautiful face, just lights up the screen, ad specialists in Kochi say. She was simply marvelous in the Tanishq and Mirinda ads, they say. They estimate that the actress must be earning more money through endorsements than films.Asin is set all to be the brand ambassador of Big Bazaar, a popular brand of retail super market with more than 100 stores spread all over India. It is a part of Pantaloon Retail India Ltd, a Future Group Enterprise.Asin is reported to have signed the deal for a big undisclosed amount. A photoshoot has already been carried out and the ad film will be shot after Dhoni returns from the New Zealand tour.Ad specialists in Kochi said Asin perhaps had the best physical qualities and fittest facial expressions in all of Mumbai as far as ad films were concerned. The only thing she lacked was the ability for professional manipulations, which she would soon learn, they hoped.“Asin is already one of the hottest and most sought after ad stars in the country. There are talks about lobby troubles for her, but I am sure that those who throw money into business would not care for the nationality or nativity of ad stars,” said an adman. He pointed out that Asin, as per a survey by a national agency, was already the hottest among movie stars to endorse consumer goods.Meanwhile, hectic efforts are going on in the production camp of director Siddique to see whether they can get Nayantara-Dileep-starer Bodyguard to the theatres to coincide with Vishu. Shooting and other related works are progressing at unimaginable speeds.Bodyguard marks the return of three top artistes to Malluwood: Nayantara, director Siddique and actor-director Thyagarajan. The shooting for the film has almost been completed at locations in central Travancore.Dileep plays Jayakrishnan, a young man with a curious habit. He acts as the bo

Asin's new Hindi film...
Asin hasn't yet accepted any new offer in Tamil, but the actress continues to be extremely busy with her Hindi projects.

She will soon make another trip to Africa for shooting the song sequences of the Hindi version of 'Ghajini'. She isn't the heroine of the Hindi version of 'Pokkiri'(in fact it looks as if the film just might be dropped for the time being). But she has got herself another new project, 'Delhi- 6'. Nothing much is known about this film.

As soon as she completes 'Ghajini', she will begin starring in this one.

Meanwhile, shooting of her Tamil project 'Dasavathaaram'has ended. The film's director, KS Ravikumar has decided to take a very liberal 5 months to complete the post-production works. That would mean that the film is not going to make its way to the theatre for a very long time.

Her only film in Tamil right now is 'Vel'with Surya in the lead.

Asin, eyewitness to a death

Asin whose career graph is on a very satisfying path is shuttling between two major projects- Vel in Tamil with Surya and the Hindi version of Gajini.

The shooting of Vel sans Asin has already been completed when she was working in the Hindi film and currently Vel unit is busy capturing her part.

At the sets of Vel, Asin was spotted recounting a hair rising incident while she was shooting in South Africa for Hindi Gajini. She says, “When we were in South Africa, I visited a seal island near Cape Town and as I was feeding the seals, I saw a young man battling for his life in the ocean. As he was wearing heavy boots, he was not able to swim and the efforts of the person who went to rescue him also were in vain. I saw him getting drowned just in front of my eyes and dying. I was completely shaken up and the scene still torments me.”

As regards Hindi Gajini, she says they have completed two song sequences in Namibia where no Indian film has been shot till now. The weather is one of the extreme kinds where the days are very hot and the nights are extremely cold.

Tamil GHAJINI is a HIT.... Again!

Guess what! GHAJINI, which was originally made in Tamil and released to a bumper response all over, is a BIG HIT all over again. And the film has Aamir Khan's Hindi version of the movie to thank! Ever since the GHAJINI mania intensified close to 4 weeks back, curiosity started building up for the original Tamil film as well. So much so that there have been an onslaught of enquiries about the film. Due to huge demand for the film's DVDs, massive reordering was called for in the weeks to follow.

Says the owner of a prominent music retail chain in Bangalore, "Even though people in South have already seen the movie in it's Tamil as well as the dubbed Telugu version, there are repeated queries about the film's DVDs. We have had to order fresh lot of GHAJINI because of such heavy demand. Since they are priced at a mere Rs. 150/=, the DVDs are going off the shelves like hot cakes."

It is not only the South Indian audience that is re-looking at comparing the Hindi version with the Tamil original. Even those who have seen the film for the first time with Aamir Khan in the lead are curious to see how did the South version look like? Especially so, since the two films boast of entirely different climax sequences. Also, Pradeep Rawat, the man who plays the title role of GHAJINI, is in double role in the film, an angle that was eliminated in the Hindi version.

Says Suruchi Sancheti, a college lecturer, "I can't understand a word of Tamil but for me watching it all over again is an interesting preposition because I want to see what was it that prompted Aamir to act in the remake. I have heard great things about the movie and have somehow laid my hands on the film's DVD. Thankfully, with English subtitles, I should be able to have fun and be entertained."

Released in 2005, Tamil version of GHAJINI also starred Asin, Nayantara and Riyaz Khan.

The beauty of sand dunes steal Asin's heart
Asin has just returned from a foreign trip to shoot for 'Ghajini.' Asked about her experiences, she waxes lyrical.

"We went to Namibia and South Africa. Hindi 'Ghajini' is the first Indian film to be shot in Namibia. The days used to be blazing hot and nights bitterly cold. We somehow managed them both.

There's desert as far as the eye can see. That's Namibia. The sand dunes are in shades of brown, blue and black. The more you look at them, the more you are amazed that nature can be so beautiful and sand can really be in such shades of color, especially when the sun shine son them. One needs a thousand eyes to drink in those beautiful sights.

Each sand dune has an identifying number. The one we shot on was # 65. The song "Suttumvizhi sudare" was shot on this 3000 ft high sand dune. When climbing up, the legs would sink one foot deep into the sand. The hot sandy desert wind would affect the eyes, nose and ears. Just thinking about how we climbed up and down like this for 6 days and shot the song gives me a feeling of thrill," says Asin, eyes closed in reminiscences.

And we felt one also needs a thousand eyes to feast eyes on pretty Asin!

Asin Gets Her Way

The South Indian actress Asin, who is making her Hindi film debut with Ghajini, had been quite displeased with the manner in which her co star Aamir Khan was orchestrating the film's publicity. She had been literally kept out of the public's eyes. But now things have changed.

The actress is believed to have had a word with the Khan and got him around to her way of thinking. The upshot is that now Aamir and Asin will appear in the latest version of Tata Sky advertisement. It has been incorporated as a part of Ghajini's promotion plans. While Asin seems to have got her way, actress Gul Panag seems to have lost out on another opportunity to work with Aamir. The original promo for the broadcaster featured her and Aamir, and now she has to make way for Asin. The film's publicity is now reaching a crescendo as the release date comes near. Ghajini is set for a December 25 release.

Asin awaits release of Vel and Dashaavtaram

Asin has finished shooting for Dashaavtaram. Only the dubbing part remains. Asin has featured in Vel and Dashaavtaram; both are slated for release during Deepavali. In additon to these films, she is also shooting for the Hindi remake of Ghajini. The next schedule for Hindi Ghajini starts only on November. In the meantime, Asin has not signed up any new offers other than an ad film. She is yet to accept offers for next year too. Asin is currently looking forward to celebrating her birthday that falls on October 26th.

Asin’s flu stalls Vel shoots

She is the busiest lass in all of Bollywood and Kollywood. However, as it seems, it might just be wise for Asin to take a break from her backbreaking shoots. Overworking and a change in weather have resulted in poor health for Asin. Here is how.

Asin was shooting for the Hindi Gajini in Namibia with Aamir Khan for the past 10 days for a duet.

The extremities in climate – scorching hot during days and freezing cold during nights – did not apparently go well with the petite beauty who caught with flu immediately. However, Asin did not let the shooting halt owing to her sickness and went on to finish the shoots before reaching Chennai a couple of days ago where she had commitments for her upcoming project Vel with Surya. After reaching Chennai, Asin participated in the Independence Day special of an FM radio – of which she is a brand ambassador – where she complained of dizziness.

She immediately returned home where her mother, Dr. Celin, diagnosed Asin of having viral flu. She is under medical supervision and is advised to be in bed rest. Owing to this, her shoots for Vel have been cancelled and are expected to commence only after her regaining perfect fitness.

Asin quits her Hindi film
When Asin accepted her first Hindi film offer, the remake of 'Ghajini', there were talks that she would also star in a series of other films.

One of them was with the director who made 'Rang De Basanthi'. The director initially had plans to bring in 'Boys' fame Siddharth to play the male lead. But something went wrong and Asin has now announced that she is not working in the film. After completing her 'Ghajini' works, she intends to return to Tamil cinema for a while.

When asked why she quit the Hindi film, named 'Delhi 6', she said that it was due to delays in beginning the film.

"The director didn't make his mind up about whom to bring in for the hero role. Due to this, the film was getting delayed constantly. Then, they wanted me to spare callsheets that weren't even available. That was why I had to refuse the offer," she says.

As long as she has all those endorsement offers pouring in, she wouldn't have to worry about losing a film or two.

Kalaimamani Award Announced

Great Women Achiever's Award

Kelvinator GR8! FLO Women Achievers Awards for 2009 were presented recently to successful women from various walks of life. I was one of the recipients.

Gracing Vanitha Nippon Film Awards

I was the Chief Guest for the Vanitha Nippon Awards that was held on Saturday, March 7th, 2009.

BACK TO CHENNAI

I came back to Chennai on December 17th to meet the winners of 'Meet and Greet Asin Contest' organised by Tata Indicom. This was also a great time to be in the city as my debut Hindi movie Ghajini is all set to release on December 25th, 2008. I was very happy to meet the contest winners and fans.

TWO BIGGIES HITTING THE SCREEN

I am very excited about my films that are hitting the screens. Dasavathaaram with the legendary actor Kamal Haasan is definitely one of the biggest films ever in Tamil. The film will also be released in Telugu and Hindi. The music is already very popular. Another film is the Hindi remake of my Tamil hit Ghajini . I am very honoured to be debuting in Hindi with one of the topmost actors in Bollywood today, Aamir Khan. I am sure that all my fans will be very happy with both my films.

MY DIWALI SUPERHIT HATTRICK
Take a look at the diwali fireworks at the Box-office for the last three years. In 2005 diwali, I had ‘SIVAKASI’ with Vijay that year’s biggest winner, while in 2006, it was ‘VARALARU’ (GodFather) with Ajith, yet another superhit. And now it is a hat-trick of Diwali hits with ‘VEL’ where I’m paired with Suriya. ‘VEL’ is topping the chart fast heading towards a superhit. I am extremely happy and thank all my viewers and fans all over the world for this awesome success ratio and the hattrick of superhits during the festival of lights.

Uthandi to Uthandi

Last Monday (Oct 8) was a memorable day in my life, as I completed work on the magnum opus Dashaavtaram. My last day shoot with Kamal Hassan was in Uthandi, a coastal village on east Coast Road near Chennai.
Incidentally, I had started the shoot of the film in Uthandi on September 11, 2006 after attending the wedding of Suriya and Jyotika. And now 13 months later, my last day shoot was also in Uthandi! And Dashaavtaram is going to be a landmark film in my career.

If I were to say that working with Kamal sir was a learning experience, it may sound clichéd, but it is a fact. I feel that after working with sir, I have graduated from the best acting university. Dashaavtaram will surely be one of the best film in my career and I have to thank director K.S.Ravikumar and the entire team.

And today (Oct 11) Kamal sir will also complete his portion and with that the entire shoot of Dashaavtaram will wrapped up and the film will be ready for a Pongal 2008 release.

I have moved out!

After months of living at the hotel Green Park in Chennai, Asin and her family have finally moved into a lovely home on Harrington Road in Chetpet, Chennai. Asin said that she and her dad were tired of living out of suitcases and wanted something more permanent and. well, like home. Her mother, Celine has also moved in from Kerala with them and the whole house has a warm and comforting atmosphere.

Asin said that the staff and management of Green Park have always been very helpful and professional, but it was great to have a home to live in!

My father is on my side ALWAYS!
Hi all. Recently I noticed a flurry of news being sent out regarding who helps me manage my work. I see that people have been talking about all sorts of things like my father quitting his work to take care of me, then him RESIGNING as my manager because he has too much work... in fact, a friend of mine told me that when she emailed a fan with the info that this is not true, that person rejected her message and said I told her all this myself!!!

This is all absolutely untrue! I urge you all to please NOT listen to rumours like this - My parents are my closest friends. At work, I trust no one else to manage my work, like I trust my father. Therefore he is and will be my manager for as long as I am in this industry!

Dear fans, I am proud to say that I am indeed Daddy's girl - he is my friend and confidante and helps me keep my schedules (and sanity) no matter how busy I am. Thanks for understanding!
