Mamta Mohandas - new sensation in Tollywood:

The hottest heroine in town! She is the new sensation in Tollywood. Like Illeana made a lot of buzz with her maiden film, Devadas, Mamta Mohandas is creating stir now even before her first film, Yamadonga, hits the marquee. Though the smashing beauty was replaced in couple of films before Yamadonga happened, she didn't give up and strived hard to get a foothold and already won a name for herself as a singer. She sung hit numbers like 'Rakhi..Rakhi' from Rakhi, '36 ..24..36..' from Jagadam, 'Akaleste Annampeduta..' from Shankardada Zindabad 'O Lammi Tikkareginda..' in Yamadonga and became an household name with them.

Mamta débuted in the Malayalam film Mayookham in 2005 directed by Hariharan. Although the film did not do well at the box-office, Mamta attracted attention for her sensitive portrayal. Her breakthrough was the role of Mammootty's sister in the successful Bus Conductor.

She then acted with Suresh Gopi in Adhbutam and Lanka and Jayaram in Madhuchandralekha. She was later roped in to play heroine in Keerthi Chakra with Mohan Lal, but opted out later due to date problems.

Mamta has recently signed a Tamil language film entitled Sivapathigaram opposite Vishal Reddy to be directed by Karu Pazhaniappan. Recently, she was approached by renowned Telugu producer, M.S. Raju to do the role of the heroine in his upcoming Telugu film, Hare Rama Hare Krishna opposite Mahesh Babu. Mamta has also signed her next Malayalam film tentatively titled Baba Kalyani opposite Mohan Lal to be directed by Shaji Kailas. Her next project titled Yamadonga opposite NTR Jr. directed by Rajamouli commences in December. Meanwhile, her first song titled Rakhee with music director Devi Sri Prasad got launched and is at No.1 on Telugu charts. Her Malayalam film Lanka got dubbed into Telugu and is titled Pokiri Pilla.

Mamta is trained in Carnatic and Hindustani music. She made her singing debut with Rakhee movie in which Devi Sri Prasad scored great music.

Interview

How did films happen?

I am Malayalee and brought up in Bahrain. I had finished my schooling there and came down to Banglore for the higher studies. While I was in the last year of my studies Hariharan (Malayalam director) saw me in a party and offered me the film Mayookam but I was not sure of accepting it. My plans were different. After finishing graduation, I wanted to study in UK and then to the middle East. So I took some time to accept the offer. I finished Mayookam my holidays, and it took more than four months to get the film released (November 2005). After that I started doing films from middle of 2006 and completed seven films so far in Malayalam.

Tell us about your entry into Telugu

It just did happen. I didn't plan it. Though I was offered movies earlier in Telugu, I didn't take up them. Then I got offer from M S Raju and Aata was supposed to be my launch pad but it didn't. Then I waited for an exciting movie offer with a great character. That I got from Rajamouli sir's Yamadonga. I was too happy when I heard about the gigantic project and importance of my role in the film. That is why I put my Tamil career on hold. We took 7 months to finish Yamadonga and it was worth it.

Malayalam film industry offers more performance-oriented roles than Telugu. Today Tamil and Telugu films are dominated with Malayalm girls. What do you see the reason for it?

Let us not underestimate Telugu movies. Its true that it is a male dominated industry but heroines are given importance here keeping their limitations in mind. I am talking with my experience in Yamadonga, so I could be wrong. Trust me, Telugu movies are doing very well in Kerala now. Recently Telugu movies are releasing in Kerala too. They are catering to what the audience is expecting from a movie.

Malayalam movies have also got into the realm of making movies that are entirely focused on heroes, where we have little to do. But yes, once in a while good stories are written..and meanwhile we Malayali girls would be busy elsewhere. Ha..ha..(laughs)

You have also become busy as singer? What do you prefer to be known - a singer or an actress?

As a singing actress. I am an actress now and a singer forever.

Are you also mastering the Telugu language? How is the dubbing experience in Telugu as you are new to the language especially the Nellore slang that you performed in Yamadonga?

(Ha..Haa) It was as tough I was trying to make the next-to-impossible possible. Even after recording 6 songs in Telugu now and having completed Yamadonga's dubbing, I must confess that I know very little. I am familiar with words but can not speak yet as its very different from my mother tongue Malayalam. But what one must understand is that there is a world's difference between recording and dubbing.

The Nellore slang has a weird tune and the dialogues of my character go in various modulations. It was quite embarrassing to say some lines because in the dubbing theatre, it would have sounded too funny to my mom, the directors and sound engineers sitting in the console unit. But dubbing has made my understanding of the language better and I thank Rajamouli sir for insisting me to do it. It was a pleasure and a privilege to voice my character. I know all my lines by heart now.

What are your next plans?

Right now Yamadonga is big for me. I want to take it easy and watch both my singing and acting grow at a gradual pace.

How is acting in a socio-fantasy like Yamadonga, particularly as one of the two main heroines while three other heroines share the screen?

It is one of the best characters that a heroine could have asked in her career. It is different and rare. It feels great to be part of such a big movie and I think that is what counts at the end.

Has Tollywood been working well for you?

Both as a singer and an actress, It has been working well for me, I didn't expect it though. Rakhee was something that came after an unpleasant surprise (replacements etc.) but was a great take off for me and everything that followed were pleasant.

Whats New

Mamta Mohandas sings her way to the top in Tollywood!

She oozed oomph on Malayalam big screen in a way Mollywood had not seen before. But the surfeit of glamour in the film Lanka , did not fetch her the kind of response Mamta Mohandas had probably expected.

When the flood of offers failed to materialise, Mamta quietly hopped over to neighbouring Tamil cinema and Telugu film world.

In Kollywood, she managed to create a bit of a ripple with her maiden movie, ‘Sivappathikaram’. But, here again, she failed to make it big.

But success was in store for her in Telugu cinema. In a different field, though. Yes, Mamta has won the best playback singer award in Telugu.

The comely maiden sang the song for a Telugu film titled ‘Rakhi’, under the baton of veteran music director Devi Prasad.

Now, success as a playback singer has set the producers on her trail. The grapevine has it that already, she has been snapped up for a Telugu film.

So, all is not lost yet, Mamta. Buck up and keep your chin up!

Mamta Mohandas heats up Kannada film industry

Mamta Mohandas , one of the busiest actress in Telugu these days, has now forayed into the Kannada film industry.

Her film ‘Gooli’ with Sudeep in the lead opened to record collections grossing a whopping 3 crore in the first week of its release – a new record in the Kannada industry.

Sudeep plays the role of a don in this film about mafia gangs.

Anup Rubens who scored the music for ‘Jai’ scored the music for ‘Gooli’.

The film is now being remade in Tamil. Surya or Vijay will play the lead roles in the remake.

‘Gooli’ has Mamta playing a rich college student Ramya who develops a liking for Gooli (Sudeep) and eventually even decides to marry him.

Though turned down at first, Gooli later reciprocates her love for him. Ramya now tries to take on the tough task of reforming Gooli, and the film ends in an amazing climax, sending a powerful message of peace.

Mamta is impressive in the song sequences, though she is found wanting in many critical scenes.

Mamta Mohandas making a splash in Tollywood

Malayali maiden Mamta Mohandas is very much in the news these days though it is away from the home turf.

Mamta, who hit the limelight with a bare and dare role in 'Lanka' opposite action hero Suresh Gopi , has made a successful debut in Tamil cinema, too.

Her debut movie, ‘Sivappathikaram’, according to trade reports, did well, fetching the beautiful actress a few offers from Telugu cinema as well.

The latest reports from Tollywood have it that Ms Mohandas has been signed up to act with Nagarjuna in his upcoming film, ‘Don’.

Besides, Mamta is trying her hand at playback singing too. She did sing a few songs set to tune by Telugu music director Devisri Prasad.

She also has sung a song composed by Keeravani. The latest take on Mamta is that she may sing a Tamil song composed by D. Imman as well.

So, things are looking up for Mamta who made her Malayalam cinema debut in the Hariharan-directed ‘Mayoogham’.

A terrific Telugu debut for Mamta Mohandas!

Malayalam actress Mamta Mohandas is poised to make a memorable debut in Telugu cinema.

The lanky heroine, who scorched the silver screen by oozing oodles of oomph in Malayalam movie "Lanka", will start shooting for her maiden Telugu flick, titled ‘Aata’, shortly.

Not only that. Mamta, who attracted attention with her dare-and-bare approach, will sing a song for actress Ileana for the movie. Music will be composed by veteran Devi Sri Prasad, who is said to be highly impressed by Mamta's singing prowess.

There is also good news for Mamta from neighbouring Tamil film world. Her maiden Tamil film, ‘Sivapathikaram’ is set to see the light of the day soon.

All in all, it is a double delight for the heroine, who figured in hitherto-unseen intimate scenes with action hero Suresh Gopi in ‘Lanka’.

Mamta Mohandas: Mollywood's latest flavour!

Her latest flick Lanka may have flopped at the box office. But newcomer Mamta Mohandas has well and truly arrived on the Malayalam film scene. There is no mistaking it.

And not many newcomers get to act with superstars right at the beginning of their career. Mamta has been lucky that way.

Her debut film in Malayalam was director Hariharan's Mayookham . The film did not click. But Mamta attracted attention for her sensitive portrayal.

Then came ‘Bus Conductor’ starring megastar Mammootty . In the film, Mamta played Mammootty's sister. Again, she got rave reviews for her role.

Now it was her turn to share reel space with yet another superstar: Suresh Gopi . The film was ‘Lanka’ in which Mamta plays a glamorous girl who stalks the hero. As a matter of fact, Mamta gets more space in the film than even Suresh.

She is figuring in two more superstar films. One is Rajasenan-directed ‘Madhuchandralekha’ in which Jayaram is her hero.

The icing on the cake is a film with the other megastar of Mollywood Mohanlal . The movie is named ‘Kirtichakra’, which is a chronicle of a soldier's life against the backdrop of the Kargil conflict.

So, the Meera Jasmine s, Navya Nair s and Kavya Madhavan s had better be careful. Mamta Mohandas is here!
